Dandy the Barber

Opimme Budapestin matkallamme, että paikallisia parturi- ja kampaamopalveluita kannattaa käyttää ihan ehdottomasti, sillä ne ovat Suomen hintatasoon verrattuna naurettavan edullisia - ja alhaisesta hintatasostaan huolimatta ilmeisen laadukkaita. Valloittava budapestiläistynyt kulttuuripersoona Ari Kupsus kutsui meidät antiikki- ja taidegalleriaansa juhlistamaan syntymäpäivääni samppanjalasillisella,  ja piti tapaamisemme yhteydessä valaisevan kulttuuriluennon paikallisista tavoista ja elämäntyylistä. Ari kertoi muun muassa, että viimeistelty ulkoasu on Unkarissa niin naisille kuin miehillekin tärkeä asia, eikä ole lainkaan tavatonta, että miehet käyvät hoidattamassa kynsiään ja hiuksiaan yhtä paljon kuin edullisia kauneudenhoitopalveluita ahkerasti kuluttavat paikalliset naiset.

Lesson no.1 when visiting Budapest: get a hair-cut. We learned about the importance of appearances to budapestians, when Ari Kupsus invited us for a glass of champagne at his Art and Antique Gallery in celebration of my 24th birthday. Among sipping champagne and admiring the works of his young protegées, Ari kindly acquainted us to local manners and lifestyle. We came to the conclusion that one of the greatest differences between the two cultures was that whilst Finns have a more practical and relaxed approach to their personal appearances, and rather invest in their homes, the Hungarians do quite the opposite. A polished appearance, Ari informed us, is equally important to both Hungarian ladies and gentlemen, and it isn't unusal for men to pay as much attention to their hair and nails as local women do.

Otimme siis Arin neuvosta vaarin, ja päätimme kulttuuritutkimuksen nimissä käydä leikkauttamassa mielitiettyni hiukset ja parran. Lähdimme metsästämään sopivaa parturia maanantai-aamuna, ja Dandy the Barber sattui ensimmäisenä silmäämme - ja vakuutti välittömästi tyylikkäällä ulkoasullaan. Päätimme tiedustella vapaita aikoja, ja kun vapaa aika löytyikin heti, istui mielitiettyni parturintuoliin sen kummemmin empimättä. Ohjeistukseksi parturille riitti "Like your hair, but longer", ja jatko-ohjeiksi sanoimme vain "whatever you think looks best". Vapaiden käsien antaminen todella kannatti, sillä kaveri oli todella huolellinen, ja erittäin taitava!

When in Rome, do as the Romans do - so we decided to get Hubs a new hair cut. The barbershop hunt began on Monday morning, but ended quickly, when we spotted Dandy the Barber - which immediately convinced us with it's atmospheric appearance. We inquired for available times, and when one was free immediately, Hubs sat down in the barber chair without hesitation. Such chivalry in the name of cultural orientation! The only instructions we gave were "like your hair, but longer", which might seem like a gamble, but our Barber proved to be very talented and extremely precise. 

Dandy the Barberin filosofia on tarjota miehille paikka, jonne he voivat tulla rentoutumaan ja hemmoteltavaksi - viettämään omaa laatuaikaansa. Ja kyllä parturoitavaa hemmoteltiinkin! Ensinnäkin muotoilutuotteet olivat ihanan tuoksuisia ja kovin laadukkaita, osa sellaiseen ihanan vanhahtavaan the-tuote tyyliin, toiset olivat jopa luonnonmukaisista ainesosista valmistettuja. Lisäksi klassinen, partaveitsellä suoritettu parranajo aloitettiin peittämällä asiakkaan kasvot hetkeksi kuumalla pyyhkeellä ja viimeisteltiin tietenkin ihanan tuoksuisella Beard Tonicilla. Ooh toivoin oikeasti hetken, että itsellänikin olisi parta! Sitten muistin, että otsis ja parta ovat ehkä yhdessä vähän no-go. 

The philosophy behind Dandy the Barber is to offer men a welcoming space, where they can relax and get pampered - spend some quality man-time. And quality really seemed to be the key word in everything at Dandy's. The styling products all smelled incredibly good, and were of high quality - in that charming, slightly old-fashioned way that is so appealing in men's grooming gear. Before a meticulous old-school shave, Hubs' face was covered with a steaming towel to open pores more effectively (or so I reasoned), and the meticulous razor-work was finalized with a beard tonic that had me sniffing his chin for the rest of the day. For a moment I almost wished I had a beard too, but then perhaps a beard and bangs are a bit of a no-go...

Dandy the Barberissa yhdistyvät oikeassa suhteessa rautainen ammattitaito, tyylikkäät puitteet ja juuri oikeanlainen, rennonletkeä tunnelma. Parturimme todella paneutui työhönsä ihailtavalla antaumuksella, ja työskentelyn tarkkuudesta, sekä välineiden käsittelystä oli helppo päätellä,  että kaveri oli intohimoinen ammattilainen työssään! Parturoinnin hinta oli myös uskomattoman huokea, kun tunnin mittainen hiusten ja parran pikkutarkka muotoilu kustansi noin parikymmentä euroa. Viiden tähden kokemuksen kruunasi se, että myös parturoitavan parraton seuralainen huomioitiin taitavasti - tyylikkäästäkin miesluolasta löytyy luonnollisesti baarikaappi täynnä kylmää juotavaa!

Dandy the Barber combines admirable workmanship and a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere - elevated by the cool, tastefully old-school space. From his attention to detail and agility with the apparatus, it was discernible that our Barber was both particularly talented, and extremely passionate about his profession - and really, there's nothing like watching a true professional at work! The price was confusingly affordable, as an hour of  meticulous hair-cutting and shaving cost us around twenty euros. The five-star experience was completed by polite catering - even a stylish man-cave naturally has a bar full of cold drink!
