The N'Ice Cream Book

Mutta eikö olekin niin, että: Ice cream will save the day - all day, everyday? Ja onhan tästä säistä saatu nauttiakin jo! Itselle jäätelö ainakin maistuu säästä riippumatta.

Writing about an ice cream book here, wearing a cashmere knit and listening to raindrops drum the roof - ahh, Finnish summer! However: Ice cream will save the day - all day, everyday, right? My appetite for ice cream is most certainly not influenced  by such minor things as the weather - or anything else, for that matter.

To us lazy and unexerting vegans, the 'N'Ice Cream Book' by Virpi Mikkonen and Tuulia Talvio will probably probably become entirely irreplaceable. Every receipe better than the last and all both gluten and milk-free - and no white sugar included. All of the over eighty receipies can also be made without an ice cream machine, which seems all too good to be true - I'll welcome anything that makes homemade ice cream an easy task with open arms.

Personally I have already tried the 'Chocolate avocado ice cream' and 'Creamy coconut Stracciatella' (that's right, I only bought the book a week ago, ahemm...), and both have been extremely delicious. Without the ridiculous amounts of white sugar that regular ice cream contains, all the flavours of the other ingredients are recognizable and the ice creams aren't  overwhelmingly sweet. All of the ingredients used in the recipes are healthy  - so I like to tell myself that eating ice cream every day is purely something I need to keep up for my health. Remind me, was there a word in about self-deceit in my last post...?

The N'Ice Cream Book has also been published in the USA, which, as I understand, is something of an unusual merit to a Finnish food book. The beautiful pictures (also by Mikkonen and Talvio), and the delicious yet healthy - and easy! - receipies are likely to  appeal to anyone independent of nationality. On my own part, I can predict with great accuracy, that this book will open at least once a week in our kitchen this summer - and probably all through autumn and winter, too.

The Finnish summer is short and weather-wise often rather unpredictable, so I have finally come to the conclusion that investing in flimsy summer numbers is an unwise endeavour. Instead, clothes that lend themselves well to layering and function comparably in between seasons, currently feel like the best investments. Despite the numerous temptations (=floor-length, vividly coloured kaftans) I am doing my very best to only acquire items that are apt for practical wear (i.e. not just for gliding about in a Palace) and which, above all, are comfortable to wear.

Kolminkertainen eläköön-huuto itsepetokselle!

In the light of these statements the title "summer jeans" is perhaps rather misleading, as I intend to wear these jeans throughout the year - if the weathers thus permit. The title was, however, influenced by my annual craving of proper white jeans with a little edge, to be worn primarily during the spring and summer seasons. After what felt like an endless search I think I found this pair last autumn and was even about to sell them on at some point, due to their loose fit. Happily enough I discarded them at the back of my wardrobe (there are a few other things there, too), because we have finally found each other at the brink of summer. I like to completely disregard the fact that as the jeans fit me well half-a-year after, I must have gained weight at an alarming pace - I'd rather tell myself that this pair has adjusted my eye for a looser fit. Long live the lies we tell ourselves.

Nevertheless I still wanted to add some of that previously mentioned edge to this pair, so I decided to cut off some length and fringe the edge of the hem. The change sounds, and is, simple enough, but requires some attention and patience to acchieve an elegant result. My personal tips can be found below:

  1. Parhaat ja kestävimmät tulokset saa kunnollisiin, tukeviin farkkuihin kuten vanhoihin Leviksiin, sillä niiden rakenne kestää purettunakin hyvin.
  4. Leikkaa harkiten - pituutta on helppo poistaa, mutta mahdoton lisätä takaisin.
  5. Jätä purkautumisvara. Itse halusin lahkeiden pituudesta n. 10cm pois, joten leikkasin 9cm pois ja jätin 1cm:n purkuvaran.
  6. Mittaa, että poistat kummastakin lahkeesta saman verran. Eriparilahkeet eivät mene edes tyylikokeilun piikkiin, varsinkaan jos ero on pieni - vaan näyttävät auttamatta vahingolta.
  7. Kauneimman "purkuhapsun" saat poistamalla poikittaisia lankoja leikatusta reunasta ratkojan avulla.

  1. The best and most durable results can be acchievde with proper, sturdy denim, such as old Levi's, because the fabric's structure is stronger.
  2. Always use sharp, large fabric scissors that cut easily through thick, tough denim.
  3. Pull the jeans on and either fold or pin where you would like the legs to end. Try the lenght with different shoes.
  4. Cut with consideration - it is easy to cut off more, but impossible to add after cutting.
  5. Leave a small allowance for fringing the edge. I wanted to shorten my jeans by 10cm, so I cut off 9cm and left 1cm for fringing.
  6. Carefully measure that you are cutting as much off both legs. Different length hems will not pass as experimentation - especially if the difference is very small - but look like a mistake.
  7. The best fringing is done by removing the horizontal threads with the help of a needle.

White-on-white-on-white on kieltämättä kesän ykkösasu, eikö?

I left a neat little fringe on my jeans, but the edge could be made more extreme, if you're into that. The one and only partner in crime for summer jeans is, of course, a pair of relaxed summer shoes, such as white Supergas. Personally I would like to knit or sew a crisp white top to pair with these two - layering different lengths feels fresh right now, so it coud be a simple dress. White-on-white-on- white is the number one summer outfit, no?

Nappula

I had been eyeing the brass 'Nappula' candle holders by Iittala as what I call " an investment to make in the indefinite future". You might now the sort that catches your eye every time, but perhaps the price is slightly out of your budget's reach or then the object is available relatively well, so it's not really on the priority list and can be left to times when you have some extra cash (which, naturally, never happens). They had been on my mind like this for a good while until around Christmas I decided I would finally get them, perfectly in time to decorate the Christmas table.

Eihän 'Made in China' tietenkään tarkoita yksioikoisesti, että tuote olisi laadullisesti huono - kyllä kiinalainen tekee messinkisen kynttilänjalan siinä missä suomalainenkin.  Made in China ei myöskään suoranaisesti tarkoita, että kynttilänjalka on valmistettu työntekijän ihmisoikeuksia sortaen - Kiinassa on hyvin monenlaisia tuotanto-olosuhteita, eikä ole todennäköistä että Iittala tuottaa kynttilänjalkansa niissä hirvittävimmissä hikipajoissa. Mutta silti, silti.

Upon fiddling with the candleholders at Iittala I happened to flip the other one around and took a glimpse at it's bottom. I admit to have perhaps overreacted slightly, but my stomach lurched nastily when I spelled the words 'Made in China'. I decided immediately that I would never buy the candleholders. I am not naïve enought to imagine that the bottom would have said 'Made in Finland', but I felt deeply betrayed all the same and left the shop empty-handed. 'Made in China' does not, of course, mean directly that the quality of the product is poor - a Chinese person is quite as capable of making a brass candle holder as a representative of any other nationality. 'Made in China' neither means directly that the worker's rights would have been trampled - there is a variety of working circumstances in China and Iittala is quite unlikely to choose the worst sweatshop to manufacture their products. And yet, and yet...

The experience left a deep resentment towards the candleholders, so it didn't even occur to me to see whether someone might be selling their own second hand. Last week - now, a year after my visit to Iittala - I was browsing through tori.fi with a completely different errand when I suddenly thought of the candle holders and typed a search for them rather half-heartedly. I don't know whether to call it luck, fate or coincidence - or irony for that matter - but there they were, a single selling notice on a pair of them. After some hesitation I sent my offer to the seller and she kindly agreed to sell the pair for me at forty euros - the price of one new Nappula. In addition, this pair has gained the perfect patina, for which the seller unneccessarily apologized!

Näin jälkikäteen tietenkin mietityttää hieman, tuinko sellaisen tuotteen jälleenmyyntiarvoa, jonka tuotanto on(ko?) ristiriidassa omien arvojeni kanssa. Tavallaanhan tilanteessa on kuitenkin vain voittajia; kynttilänjalkojen myyjä sai korvauksen tarpeettomaksi käyneestä tavarasta ja minä sain puoleen hintaan esineet, joita  en olisi voinut ostaa uutena - eivätkä rahani näin ollen tue suoraan kynttilänjalkojen tuotantoa. Iittala menetti kaupat kanssani, mutta saivatko he jotain arvokkaampaa?

Afterwards I can't help thinking whether my actions have now supported the resale value of a product whose production disagrees (?) with my personal values. On the other hand, it is a win-win-win situation, no? The seller got some compensation for objects that had become unnecessary for her and I acquired the desired objects at half the price and in a way that does not signal my approval for their production. Iittala lost their potential transaction with me, but did they gain something more valuable?

Olisiko tuolloin kuitenkin hienoa, että pohjassa lukisi "Made in Finland"? Vai kertooko "Made in China" enemmän siitä maailmanajasta jota Isoäiti on elänyt?

I like the candle holders a lot. Thus, it is likely that they will decorate our dining table during coutless celebrations, big and small, after which someone might inherit them from me or perhaps they will be sold to decorate another table. The objects will be valued, cared for and they will, at some point in the distant future, symbolize all the important moments which they have helped decorate. As they are strongly profiled  decor artefacts, they will also always be connected to their reknown manufacturer. Decades from now, someone might be looking at old photographs from their dew and remark: "Oh see! Those are the pair of Iittala candle holders we inherited from Grandma!" Would it make the memory sweeter then, if the bottom of the candle holders would say 'Made in Finland'? Or does 'Made in China' speak more truthfully of the times Grandma has lived in? Or do those three words bear any relevance at that point? The only thing I know for certain is that these matters should not be passed without reflecting on them. The objects we acquire into our homes represent our values and right now is the appropriate time to weigh what values we want to represent with our actions - because the world is changing fast, and the opportunity to influence it's ways will be gone in the blink of an eye.
