Shoe Therapy

In collaboration with Brunngård AB*

For some odd reason I always associate shoe maintenance with these weather-wise more demanding months of the year, although it is important to care for our shoes throughout the entire year. However, shoe maintenance is a routine we disregard too often. Shoes are, of course, less expensive in relation to our income than they were some decades ago, so perhaps we do not pay as much attention to taking care of them properly. It's easy to buy a new pair of shoes to replace a ruined one - but is more profitable in the end? It certainly isn't the more sustainable option.

But then, why do shoes need to be taken care of? Primarily for the obvious reason that proper maintenance will lengthen their lifeline. Although you might not be interested in wearing the same shoes endlessly, a pair of well-kept shoes can be donated or sold on - a broken pair won't help a second user, no matter how desperately they're in need. Secondly, a pair of immaculate shoes is, without question, the best way to make a good first impression. And thirdly - Swedish Brunngård released a wonderful, eco-friendly shoe care line Springyard this autumn.

Springyard's 'Shoe Therapy'  line has a suitable product for every shoe material and the products are ridiculously easy to use. Each container has a set of clear, graphic instructions and has been numbered according to the phase of the maintenance process it should be used at: "1. Clean 2. Care 3. Protect 4. Refresh". Thus it is easy to remember which product should be used when. The Shoe Therapy products have to also be credited for their wonderful scents, which are mainly acchieved by the natural ingredients of the prodcuts. A huge credit on my own part also goes to the perfect package design. A set of good care products are key in orthodox shoe maintenance, but some considerations should already be made when first buying the shoe itself.

When buying shoes already consider the possible care procedures. Inquire which materials have been used for all the different parts of the shoe and which products can be used to take care of them. Note, that if the outer sole is made of leather, they will have to be coated with a rubber sole by the cobbler before you can use the shoes outside. This will add to their buying price. Leather outer soles need to be protected before use, because they will get ruined when in contact with moisture and wear out quickly. Weigh the suitability of the shoe in relation to how and where you are looking to use them. Are white satin ballerinas the best option for a daily walk over possibly wet cobble-stoned streets? Check whether the inner sole of the shoe can be detached and ask staff whether they can be washed. In case the inner sole is undetachable, always try the shoe on with a separate insole. If you do not already own an approprite care product for your new shoes, buy one directly, so it is on hand when the shoes look like they need it.

Käytetyn kengän hoitojärjestys on:

Shoe maintenance depends on what material the shoe is made of. In case either the shoe or the care product are new to you, always test their compatibility on a hidden spot - especially when the shoe and care product have not been sold together. Shoes should be cared for thoroughly at least once a month, in order to keep on track with their condition and any necessary reparations. If polishing your shoes alone seems boring, host a shoe maintenance day with a friend - the shoes will seem to clean themselves whilst you exchange the latest gossip. Use an old broken sock or a piece from a discarded t-shirt, towel or pillowcase to clean and care your shoes. You don't need new material - although clean - for this as the cloths will get ruined beyind repair anyway. You might also want to consider which clothes you wear, as care products, especially those with pigment, will be hard to remove. The correct order of caring for a used shoe is:

1.) Puhdista. Puhdistamiseen sopii oikeastaan materiaalista riippumatta kuivapesuvaahto.

1.) Clean. Cleaning is best done, independent of the surface materail, with a delicate dry cleaning foam. Springyard's 'Universal Cleaning Formula' is made of coconut and jojoba oils, so it is both nourishing and delicate for leather shoes. Suede shoes can be cleansed with a dry cleaning foam, suede brush and/or suede stone. A suede stone or cleaning block may, however, remove colour from suede shoes, so use it with caution, especially with strong-coloured shoes. Tennis shoes and sneakers can also be rinsed with gall soap to remove persistent stains, but always do your best to avoid soaking the inner sole of the shoe. White outer soles can be cleansed with a 'magic sponge' or stain remover. The gravel and dirt inside shoes can be easily removed by vacuuming.

2.) Hoida. Hoitovaiheessa on tärkeää käyttää oikeaa hoitotuotetta oikealle materiaalille. Pintanahkainen kenkä tarvitsee lankin, rasvan tai vahan. Valitse rasvasta ja lankista aina mustaa pigmenttiä sisältävä tuote mustalle kengälle. Springyardin Leather Cream Formula korjaa kengän pieniä kolhuja ja naarmuja väripigmenttinsä ansiosta ja jättää kengän kauniin kiiltäväksi. Tuubin päässä on sieni, jonka läpi rasva levittyy helposti.

2.) Care. At this phase it is important to use the right product for the right material. Smooth leather shoes should be cared for with shoe polish, cream or wax. If using polish or cream on a black shoe, always select a product that includes black pigment. Springyard's 'Leather Cream Formula' repairs small damages due to its colour pigment and leaves the shoe looking very polished. Shoe polish serves the same purpose, but leaves the shoe slightly more shiny. Wax is transparent - not colourless - and thus can be applied on any shoe, independent of colour. Springyard's 'Leather Wax Formula' is pleasently flexible and comes with a convenient sponge, which is ideal for applying the product. Cream, polish and wax should all be applied in rotating motion and thin layers. After applying the care product, the shoe should be shined with a clean, soft brush. Larger defects on a smooth leather shoe can be fixed with leather paint, which is available at most cobbler's shops.

Suede and nubuck shoes are cared for with a renovating substance, which can also include a colour pigment. Again, always choose a black product for a black shoe. Springyard's 'Renovator' leaves a suede and nubuck surface looking good as new - having just fixed a completely hopeless case of his, I really know what I'm talking about. Suede and nubuck renovators are always applied by dabbing, never rubbing back-and-forth or circurlarly. After the renovator has dried, the shoe should be brushed with a suede brush to raise the "hair"  of the suede/ nubuck, acchieving the original, supple look of the surface. Waxed and oiled nubuck resembles nubuck, but has an oily feel. Waxed nubuck endures moisture slightly better than regular suede or nubuck, because of its water-repellant finish. This oily finish should be reinforced with an oil spray, also available in the Springyard line, say once or twice every two weeks.

Both smooth leather and suede brushes should always be labelled by colour, so as to prevent the irreversible damage caused by using a brush first on a dark and then a light shoe - the colour pigments in shoe care products are strong and difficult if not impossible to remove from a lighter surface. Also, when buying shoes, always inquire (although this information should really be available on the shoe itself), whether the heels of the shoe are also leather. If yes, care for them with at least as much, if not more, devotion as the upper. Independent of the surface material, always keep an eye on the heel tags. Heel tags should always be replaced at a cobbler's shop before the wear reaches the actual heel - repairing damage to the heel is more demanding and expensive. An easy way to freshen a shoe is to wash - or in the most hopeless case change - the shoe laces.

3.) Suojaa. Nahkakenkä kannattaa aina suojata likaa ja kosteutta vastaan. Totutuin tapa suojata kengät on suihkuttaa niihin kerros kosteussuojasuihketta.

3.) Protect. Leather shoes should always be protected against water and stains. The most common way to do this, of couse, is to spray them with a waterproofing spray. Waterproofing sprays might, however, include ingredients (especially alcohol) that dry leather out, thus making it vitally important that you pay meticulate attention to applying cream or wax on the shoes to keep them from shrivelling. Vegetable tanned or 'Waterproof'-labelled shoes don't often go well together with a regular waterproofing spray, hence wax is the ideal product for protecting them, as wax provides a light water- and stain resistant surface. Springyard's 'Universal Waterproofing Formula' is a delicate and non-toxic waterproofer, that can be, unlike the traditional waterproofers, sprayed inside. The Universal Waterproofing Formula can often also be used on shoes for which waterproofers are not recommended - and still the resiliance is similar to that of a regular waterproofer. However, a leather shoe can not be turned into a wellington by any tricks of the trade, so when there's an honest downpour outside, you're best off wearing the real wellingtons or at least pulling a pair of galoshes on top of your leather shoes.

General maintenance between your shoe care days is an easy way of preserving and lengthening the lifeline of your shoes. As do other items of clothing, shoes too, tire if they are worn every day, week after week. Thus it is vital, that your shoes get to rest, at least every other day. I've just given you the best excuse to own more shoes! Whether your feet sweat or don't (the latter I don't believe to exist, but people insist so very often), separate insoles should always be worn between your foot and the shoe's inner sole - except perhaps in the case that the shoes inner soles are detachable. Springyard's basic leather insoles are soft labskin and have an active carbon filter on the reverse side, which keeps your shoes fresh and draws moisture. Once the white spots on the reverse side of the insole are gone, it is a good idea tochange them for a new pair. Springyard also makes shaped insoles, which provide necessary arch and inner arch support for your foot. I personally wear a shaped insole in all the shoes I can fit hem in (they take up around half a size) - especially shoes that I wear on a daily basis. To make your shoes warmer, add a lambskin winter insole. Remember to always cleanse all dirt of your shoes directly after contracting it and use a shoe horn to both dress and undress your shoes.

Storing shoes the right way is also important in preserving them in their original condition. Shoes should be stored in room temperature, protected from both artificial and daylight. Especially leather shoes and rubber boots should be guarded against radiators, because warm air will easily dry both. A good mnemonic for leather shoes is: "Where butter melts, leather burns". Thus, although a leather shoe would get soaked, always allow it to dry in room temperature - never attempt to speed the process by placing the shoe atop a radiator or inside a drying cabinet. Shoes should always be stored in a breathable container, so plastic bags and boxes are highly inappropriate. When travelling, shoes shoud instead be kept in a fabric bag (it's the best when these come with the shoe, sometimes one for each). Party and out-of-season shoes should be stored - clean and cared for - in their own boxes. When buying shoes, you should also consider getting each pair the appropriate shoe trees to keep the shoes in shape when they are not being worn. This is especially vital for high-shanked boots. Whenever you take off your shoes, pull out the insole to allow it and the shoe to dry and air more efficiently.

We Started This | Redefining Second Hand

Toisen vanha vaate. Siinä ajatus, joka herättää monenlaisia mielipiteitä. Itse en ole koskaan kavahtanut ajatusta, että vaatettani on käyttänyt joku muu minua ennen. Päinvastoin, vanhat vaatteet ovat aina olleet minulle aarteita, koska niillä on mielenkiintoisempi tarina kuin uusilla vaatteilla. Second handia, kuten uusiakin vaatteita, on kuitenkin tarjolla monenmoista ja juuri kaikenkirjava tarjonta on varmasti yksi syy sille, miksi moni edelleen kiertää ne kaukaa. Kestävämmästä kuluttamisesta on kuitenkin tullut viime vuosina trendikästä. Sitten kuvioiohin tuli We Started This.

Someone else's old clothes. There's a thought that provokes all kinds of reactions. Personally, I have never shunned the idea of wearing garments that have previously belonged to someone else. On the contrary, second hand items have always been treasures for me, as they are often more unique and of better quality than new clothes. Unfortunately, second hand, just as new clothes, is sold in a variety of qualities, and the iridescent selection is without doubt one of the reasons why many people still squint wearing second hand. However, sustainable consuming has raised its profile recently. Commodities move from one owner to the next at the speed of light within Facebook's "second hand groups", new "fewer, better" brands are established at a throttling pace and KonMari is on everyone's reading list. Nevertheless, not long ago buying second hand clothing in Helsinki still meant either a) bartering awkwardly with another private citizen or b) rummaging at charity shops or c) getting a week's workout by trecking between the town's packed second hand shops, all scattered, as if by purpose, in completely different directions. But then, along came We Started This

WST on vuonna 2013 perustettu second hand-vaatteiden verkkokauppa, joka on jo kaksivuotisella alkutaipaleellaan saavuttanut useita  huomionarvoisia merkkipaaluja. Eikä ihme; WST on tullut markkinoille juuri oikeaan aikaan ja lunastanut ammattimaisella otteellaan uskomattoman pitkään tyhjänä lojuneen, laadukkaita second hand-vaatteita myyvän online-offline konseptin markkinapaikan.

WST is an online shop for quality second hand clothing and has, since its establishing in 2013, acchieved some remarkable milestones. And no wonder; WST came to the market at precisely the right moment, filling the (astonishingly) gaping marketplace for a quality second hand clothing online-offline concept, with their extremely professional touch. The growing demand for more sustainable ways to consume has not gone unnoticed at WST either: "Yes, there has been a great shift towards the preference of buying items and using services that are meaningful in many ways. People are inclined to buy and own less, and look for items that enhance the overall quality of their life. Second hand clothing is one example of this and there is a common understanding of why it makes sense to reduce, re-use and recycle."

WST:n missio on määritellä uudelleen käsite 'second hand clothing' ja tehdä second hand-vaatteista realistinen, sekä houkutteleva vaihtoehto uuden ostamiselle. Miksi second hand sitten kaipaa uudelleen määrittelyä? Siksi olemme panostaneet mallistoon, jossa nämä asiat on otettu huomioon. Olemme luoneet palvelun, jossa hoidamme kaiken vaatteen myymiseen liittyvän, jotta second hand vaatteiden ostaminen ja myyminen olisi mahdollisimman vaivatonta ja inspiroivaa".

WST's mission is to redefine the concept of second hand clothing and to make second hand both a realistic and attractive alternative for buying new. But why does 'second hand' need to be redefined? "We want second hand to reach its full potential. We believe that second hand can be a genuine alternative to buying new, without compromising style or quality. That’s why we have created a collection that is easy-to-shop and ready-to-wear. Around our carefully curated collection we have created a service where we take care of the practicalities involved in selling and promoting the products, so that selling and buying second hand would be both effortless and inspiring."

Kauppakeskukset mielletään usein ökykulutuskulttuurin symboleiksi, kun taas kestävämpää muotia on saanut ostaa lähinnä hajanaisista pikkuputiikeista. Kauppakeskuksilla on täten ollut yliote kuluttajiin helppoutensa vuoksi. WST voitti kuitenkin Cityconin Citycontest-kilpailun, jonka pääpalkintona oli liiketila kauppakeskus Iso Omenassa, Espoossa. Liike avasi ovensa 3.8. ja on nyt auki viidettä kuukautta, eikä asiakkaista vaikuta olevan puutetta. Vanhat valta-asetelmat saattavat siis viimein käydä läpi hienoista muutosta. "Citycontest-kilpailussa etsittiin uusia ideoita kauppakeskuksiin.

Shopping centers are often perceived as symbols of over-consumption, whereas conscious alternatives are often only available in scattered boutiques and webshops. Shopping centers' selections have thus had the advantage of being more easily available to consumers. However, WST won Citycon's Citycontest in July, scoring a retail space in the Iso Omena shopping center. The WST shop opened its doors on the third of August and is now in business for its fifth month - with no signs of slowing down. It seems the old positions might slowly be shifting."The Citycontest competition by Citycon looked for new ideas to be implemented in shopping centers. We proposed a concept where second hand clothing is part of the shopping center's selection and online meets offline. Also, the idea is that people can bring items to be sold, thus creating an ecosystem of re-using. This was the winning idea and we made retail history by being the first ever second hand store in a Finnish shopping mall. Winning the competition was exciting, because it will allow us to expand, and cater to a wider audience, which means that our business has an increasing potential to influence the traditional consumer culture of shopping centers.

In addition to bringing second hand clothing to shopping centers, it would of course contribute to a more effective cycle if clothing brands informed their customers - at the register - on how to recycle their clothes once they no longer use them. After scoring their historical business space in the Citycon contest, WST launched an incredible collaboration with Finnish design house Marimekko: "We are currently creating new ways for brands to engage their customers in re-using their products. We launched a concept together with Marimekko, where their employees brought us Marimekko items that they no longer use and we merged them into a second hand Marimekko collection. In the future, we want to be part of creating even more extensive concepts for sustainable fashion. From our part, we want to rebel against the current culture of disposable goods. We think that fashion brands should take more responsibility over their items’ durability. By recycling their own items, fashion brands also have a chance to demonstrate that their products last through several life cycles. Furthermore, we want to encourage brands to ensure that their design and manufacturing processes reinforce this idea."

In the end, it might just be most beneficial to think how the life cycle of a garment will continue once we no longer have use for it - before we decide to buy it in the first place. Not all garments, however, are suitable to be sold on as second hand, because their quality is not adequate to last a second cycle as such. If a garment pills and has lost half of its colour by the time you wash it the third time, there's no hoping that it will last with a second owner. So what kinds of items can be sold on? "It’s all about the quality of the piece. If an item has lasted long even in every-day use, there is strong evidence that it will do so in future use with the new owner as well. These kind of pieces are worth investing in and selling onwards later. Perfect second hand products are high-quality, made of natural materials such as silk, leather or wool and have a timeless design, and therefore have great potential to be cornerstones of a functional wardrobe. Our customers are especially interested in well-known Nordic brands and young designers."

Silken

Do you know the feeling after using a cosmetics product for a while and thinking it's so good you will never give it up? The product is so perfect, as if it was designed with you in mind. The 'Nude' foundation by Dior was that product for me. I first tried it as a recommendation from my best friend and then stuck to it for several years, although I only used three containers, because above all the foundation was so sufficient. However, since I made the decision to change everything into natural cosmetics, I had to give up Nude, although I quite honestly doubted that I could ever find an equal replacement.

Rutistettuani viimeiset pisarat Nude-purkin pohjalta kasvoilleni toukokuussa lähdin siis tutustumaan markkinoihin ja ensimmäisenä vastaan tuli RMS Beautyn "Un" Cover-Up.

After squeezing the last drops from the Nude container in May I started to explore the market and first bumped into the 'Un' Cover-Up from RMS Beauty. RMS was alright, but I felt that it moved around on my face too much for my liking. Then again, the past summer was personally a tough period for me, so I might have been too relentless towards my foundation - so perhaps RMS will get another chance at some point. Scrubbing the last remains of RMS, the very same friend who had recommended Nude years ago, told me that a certain make-up professional had complemented the Kjær Weis series to her and urged me to give it a try. So, off I went to Jolie and came out with the light, yellow-tinted shade 'Silken' in my bag*.

And, what do you know - it might well be, that Silken is about to become a very equal replacement for Nude. Silken is admirably easy and versatile to use. Applying it with a brush or fingers, it is easy to acchieve a light result, but Silken can also be layered to acchieve a very opaque result. Even a light layer will cover both redness and those dark bags under your eyes effectively (!). Silken is surprisingly "dry" despite it's nurtricious composition, which includes argan, jojoba and coconut oils. I personally detected that the foundation gets stuck on my skin's dry parts from time to time, but the problem was solved by applying a few drops of oil underneath, recommendation courtesy of Jolie.

Last, but certainly not least: the packaging is sublime. The elegant, sliding mirror-case is only purchased once, after which an empty pallette can be replaced by a new one (which, naturally, costs only half the price of the whole package). In this aspect, KW surpasses Dior (and so many others) with flying colours, as I remember how quilty I felt tossing an empty Dior container when it could only be replaced by a new one. It is probably clear without mention, that I enjoy it extremely, when a product has been designed bearing in mind the thought of how it can be replaced sustainably or recycled. I predict, with great self-confidence, that Silken will redeem the position of a trusted foundation in my beauty bag for several years.
