Into the Wild

It's that time of the year again, when it gets dark in the afternoon. I want to spend my twilight moments at home in canle light, wrapped in a blanket and listening to the wind blowing or rain drumming outside. During these nights, scented candles are the best thing I know. In addition to the atmosphere they create, they have the ability to carry you to another place and time; cliffs at the ocean shore, snowy mountain gorges, into the wild.

A certain scented candle will always remind me of the times when I first lit it. Thus, in a way, I always create a new phase in life, a new scent-bound memory with a new candle.

Tänä syksynä muistoni rakentuvat Roomage sisustusliikkeestä löytämäni Upwined Candlesin 'Into the Wild' - tuoksun ympärille. Into the Wild tuoksuu kuusipuulta, appelsiinilta, mäntymetsältä ja katajalta - eli taivaalliselta.

This autumn my memories will build around 'Into the Wild' by Upwinded candles, found at the Roomage interiors boutique. All the information concerning these candles is currently only available in German, which I cannot understand a word of. I do know, however, that these candles are made out of soy wax into the bottoms of recycled wine bottles, so they are both vegan and made of recycled post-consumer waste. 'Into the Wild' smells of spruce, orange, pinewood and juniper - in other words, heavenly.

Scandal

In collaboration with Bio Nature*

I have always thought that carefully groomed nails elaborate a neat appearance. Unkept nails are among the most sloppy-looking things I know. However, my own nails were rather weak for some time, with large chunks chipping of regularly. I began to notice that the chipping went hand-in-hand with applying nailpolish and began to think that the fault was in an aceton nailpolish remover. I changed into an aceton-free remover, but still couldn't detect a change for the better. I deduced that the fault had to be in either the polishes or files that I was using. Desperate to fix my nails, I was about to look into supplements, when, as part of my organic cosmetics project, I changed both the file and polishes I used. And suddenly my nails became completely differeent.

Kure Bazaarin lakat minulle esitteli maahantuoja Bio Naturen edustaja Nudgessa. Kure Bazaar on kuitenkin hoitanut kynsiäni petrokemiallisia kanssasisariaan paremmin. Uuden viilan hankinta (tästä lisää myöhemmin) vaikutti varmasti osaltaan muutokseen, mutta havaitsin muutosta parempaan jo ennen uutta viilaa - tuolloin olin vasta vaihtanut vanhat kynsilakat Kure Bazaariin. Oma suosikkisävyni syksyksi on ehdottomasti dramaattinen Scandal.

The Kure Bazaar polishes were first introduced to me by the representative of their Finnish importer, Bio Nature, at Nudge. I fell for the colour selection and ecological composition immediately. 85% of Kure Bazaar nailpolishes consists of natural ingredients and they include less petrochemical products than nailpolishes in general. However, no need to sacrifice quality for an ecological composition. Two layers of polish will result in a deep colour in most shades and the polishes dry quickly. The result is shiny and lasts at least as long as the much-spoken-of O.P.I and Essie polishes. Unlike their petrochemical rivals, though, Kure Bazaar polishes clearly care for my nails. Changing my file (more on this later) has definately had an impact, but I noticed a change for the better already before - right after changing into Kure Bazaar. My favourite shade for autumn is the dark and dramatic 'Scandal'.

Mushroom risotto

I'll go ahead and say that we're in the middle of the mushrooming season, but if I am quite honest, I haven't been to a forest for weeks, so I really don't know. My yellowfoots were dried last autumn and I still have some of that stock left. I just made that sound like I would have picked these with my own little hands - I haven't, but I thank my Mother and all the ladies next door who hop to their secret mushroom spots at every chance given. One of my aims in life might just be to live next to a forest, from where I could get all my berries and mushrooms every autumn. A few hens and a goat on the backyard, a little bee farm and some carrots to the ground and I wouldn't have to go to the grocier's at all. I would be Mrs. Farmkeeper. It makes a pretty picture, but I don't know how well I would deal with the realities of it, in the end. On to more current matters, the following is the world's best mushroom risotto recipe. Just like my mushrooms, this recipe too, is courtesy of my mother. I add my personal twist by substituting some (approx. 2dl) of the vegetable broth with the water in which I soak my yellowfoots before cooking. If you want to use fresh mushrooms, prepare a litre of broth.

Mushroom risotto
(serves four)

  • 3-4 dl risotto rice
  • 1 large onion
  • Olive oil
  • 1 dl white wine
  • 8 dl vegetable broth
  • 2 dl mushrooms
  • 1 dl walnuts
  • 1 dl grated grana padano cheese
  • pepper
  • salt

Prepare the vegetable broth. Chop the onion and simmer it in olive oil at the bottom of a five litre kettle. Add the rice and simmer until it is translucent. Add the white wine and let it get sucked up by the rice / evaporate. Add one desiliter of the vegetable broth at a time, allowing each portion suck into the rice before adding the next. Continue to do so until the broth is finished. Season with pepper and salt. Chop the walnuts and roast them on a frying pan. Remove the walnuts from the pan and add the mushrooms, frying until they have lost most of their fluid. Add the mushrooms, walnuts and grana cheese into the rice and stir properly. Enjoy!

Back to Black

The days are getting shorter again and I, inevitably, go back to black. I wonder whether it's a sign of getting old(er) or what, but I currently appreciate ease over everything else, when getting dressed. All things reliable, the sort that can just be pulled on in the morning dusk, without the extra fuss. My passion for dressing is not experiencing a slow death, nor have I ceasd caring about my appearance. I simply want to spend more time wearing the clothes than standing in front of my wardrobe in my underwear, contemplating.

There's no need for a complex analysis to detect what has triggered the current mood. We still don't have a full-body mirror in our apartment, so I can't stand in front one wondering, whether the colours and proportions of two garments really meet in a desired way. Secondly, I recently re-read Rinna's book as I wrote this review on it, and it made me quit all futile daydreaming and return to the basic principles of dressing. If you're in the middle of a crisis brought on by the new season, I suggest you read the book before buying anything new.

This Sanna Hopiavuori 'Marta' dress, made out of recycled linen blend, has become an autumn favourite, and I've probably worn it four days a week. A black dress that is ridiculously easy to upkeep, very comfortable to wear and that can be utilized endlessly when layering is a truly irreplaceable garment. Linen is often related with summer, but I see no reason why it wouldn't b quite as functionable in the autumn. I recently ordered the Sanna Hopiavuori 'Shiloh' dress in granite grey merino wool through Yalo, with the sleeves and hem lengthened for me to keep warm during winter. The leather coat is by Aaltonen, an old Finnish leather and fur garments provider, but I found it through Tori.fi. It had been the seller's mother's old and functioned as an overcoat for better occasions. It has a fluffy fox fur collar, that can be detached with buttons. I have worn the coat every day since the package arrived, and the light padding on the inside keeps the cold out just perfectly as the temperatures begin to fall.

How I ever imagined to fit all that I have to say about this book in one post I haven't the faintest clue, but let me give it a try. 'Hyvän mielen vaatekaappi' (= a conscious wardrobe) by Rinna Saramäki was the first book abput the dark side of the clothing industry and sustainable dress, that I ever read. I cannot remember how I first came to browsing it at the bookshop, but I do remember, quite vividly, that the light pink cover didn't thrill me at all. I wasn't completely unaware of the problems related to the mass consumption and production of the clothing industry before reading the book, but it opened my eyes in many ways.

Kirjan löytöhetkellä olin jokseenkin ahdistunut oman vaatevarastoni tilasta.

When I first grabbed the book, I was somewhat anxious about the state of my own wardrobe. It felt like half of the World's clothes had passed through it within two years (which isn't true, of course, Greenpeace estimates that the textile and clothing industries currently produce an approximate 80 billion items of clothing per year), and only an unfortunate few had really come to stay. I have always bought a significant amount of my clothes from flea markets and second hand shops, but I was primarily bothered by the sheer quantity of clothes and the continuous buying. I couldn't find my niche, which was very important to me, because dressing and clothes have been a very important form of self-expression for me since I was a child. I didn't think for a second, that a little pink book could hold all the answers.

Never judge a book by it's cover, they say. The book is divided into two parts: 'An unconscious wardrobe and 'Towards a conscious wardrobe'. The first part deals with the current defects of the clothing industry, refering to the developments in the clothing and textile industries during the last decades and how they have moulded consumers' behaviour. This part also looks closely at the value chain of a mass-produced item, a complex cause-and-effect chain that has several unfortunate clobal impacts. Although the topics are extremely heavy, Saramäki does not pour the entire problem (and blame) on the reader. She is able to relate to the reader's emotions and offer small, realistic solutions for making an impact without changing an entire lifestyle in the blink of an eye. Although I knew about the discrimination that takes place within the clothing industry, the book shed light on things that I hadn't even realised to consider before. Learning about it all naturally makes one angry and I personally went through a variety of emotions whilst reading. At times I wanted to kick-and-scream, because it all felt so wrong, sometimes I felt ready to go to the ends of the World to make a difference. On the bright side, I often laughed out loud, too, as Saramäki has a particularly witty way of expressing how ridiculous the entire situation is.

The second part of the book, 'Towards a conscious wardrobe' goes through a wide variety of considerations to keep in mind when building oneself a conscious wardrobe. This part of the book is somewhat like a self-help guide, but not at all in that annoying American way: "these are the classic items every woman should own, these trousers only go with thse kinds of shirts, and never pair these two colours", etc. The guide really allows and respects the reader's personality and style of dress, but still manages to give advice on how to execute that style in a more sustainable way - and the reader is not left feeling that they should dress in hemp pyjamas and felt shoes for the next five years of their life to compensate for all the horrors they have supported  by funding fast fashion.

Lopultakin arvostan teoksessa eniten sen sympaattisuutta. Teos tulee todella lukijan iholle, sillä Saramäen kokemiin tunnontuskiin ja turhautumiseen  - joita korostavat Saramäen omat sympaattiset kuvitukset -, voi samaistua jokainen vaatteisiin pukeutuva ja niistä kiinnostunut. Teos sisältää paljon sellaista tietoa, jonka etsimiseen tavallisella kuluttajalla ei kuitenkaan välttämättä olisi rahkeita - saati aikaa - ja tarjoilee sen erittäin helposti sulatettavassa muodossa. Teos tähtää siihen, että lukijasta tulisi tuon murheen kryynin, oman vaatekaappinsa herra, vaikka ihan pieni askel kerrallaan. Itse suosittelen aloittamaan lukemalla erään pienen vaaleanpunaisen kirjan

In the end, I appreciate how down-to-earth the book manages to be, despite its difficult topic. The book is extremely approachable, because anbyone who wears and is interested in clothing will find it easy to relate to Saramäki's own frustration - highlighted by her sympathetic illustrations. The book also contains much of the sort of information that a regular consumer might not find access to - let alone make sense of it all - in an easily digestable form. The aim of the book is, of course, to make the reader the master of their own wardrobe, even if it can only happen one small step at a time. I suggest everyone in need starts their personal process by reading a certain little pink book.

Meadowsweet

Aloitin viime kuussa pienen luonnonkosmetiikkakokeilun.

I started a small natural cosmetics project last month. In short, whenever I run out of one of my regular beauty products, I replace it with an organic option. Of all the products that I use, the thought of changing my deodorant has probably made me most nervous. I don't sweat a whole lot, but according to some sources organic deodorants do not hold as well as "normal" deodorants - which is no great news for a person who spends most of her time draped in either cashmere or silk, neither of which react well to sweat. Reading other bloggers' (re)views on the matter only made me more insecure. The blogger recommends one product, a reader comments that they would never recommend that product. A second reader recommends a third product and a third reader comments that they definately don't agree with the second reader, but would recommend what the blogger prefers.

The salesperson at Jolie can't help much either: you can't know, until you've tried them all - sweating is a very personal thing, you see. I choose the Acorelle meadowsweet deodorant purely by scent. The deodorant is ECOCERT certified and does not include alcohol or aluminium (aluminium, aluminium chlorohydrate), which, as I understand it, are the most dangerous chemicals in antiperspirants and normal deodorants. On my departure, the salesperson at Jolie still reminds me that I shouldn't form an opinion based on the two first weeks of trial, especially if I have used antiperspirants prior to this product. Apparently the aluminium in antiperspirants blocks the skin pores and changing into a milder natural deodorant might cause a strong reaction from the body. There are several intense debates about aluminium and its effects in deodorants all over, but no waterproof scientific proof to indicate either way. I don't loose my calm over a few chemicals, but would quite obviously prefer the cleanest and least harmful option - especially if that's what I am paying for. Let's not forget, that the organic cosmetics business is a business like any other, and so promises and sales pitches should always be listened to a little sceptically.

Kokeilu herätti kuitenkin haluni kokeilla muitakin vaihtoehtoja luonnonkosmetiikan puolelta - Mádaran deodorantti on ilmeisesti monen kantaa ottaneen suosikki. Kiinnostaisi myös lukea arvostelu jonkun toimesta, joka hikoilee oikeasti paljon - silloinhan deodorantti pääsisi oikeasti koetukselle.

I have now used the Acorelle Meadowsweet deodorant for a few weeks. Until now it has served me alright. I will admit, that after what was said at Jolie I might have been slightly sensitive about what goes down in my armpits, so I will not give a review with great conviction. Obviously my armpits have been slightly more moist than with an antiperspirant, but that was probably to be expected. I haven't realized too much of a difference, except for when exercising - and this might be a result of just looking at my armpits more intensely through the gym mirror than ever before. The scent of the deodorant doesn't stick to clothing too badly, although airing my clothes every night might effect this. I haven't noticed that it would stain clothing, but can with certainty say that it dries slightly slower than my regular one before. The container says that deodorant should never be applied after shaving, but with little time in the morning, I have often done so and haven't yet noticed any side-effects. On the whole, this product hasn't awakened strong feeling either for or against, it has functioned as well as its predecessor. The experiment did, however, awaken my interest to give other organic deodorants a try - Mádara seems to have quite a few fans. It would also be interesting to read a review by someone who sweats more, because the deodorant would then be put to a more effective test.

The Story of an Old Dresser

Uusi kuukausi ja muutoksen aika! Suurin osa blogini lukijoista on tällä kotimaassa Suomessa, joten suomenkielinen teksti löytyy vastedes tästä ylhäältä, teidän lukijoiden toiveiden mukaan. Sitten itse asiaan. Kun tuo tavaranomistaja sattuu vielä olemaan naurettavuuteen asti tinkimätön esteetikko, on tyypillinen first world problem valmis.

New month, new tricks! Most of my readers are here in Finland, so from now on the Finnish version will be up first and the English translation down here, as desired by you, my friends. And then, back to business. Since we moved into our new apartment, I have unsurprisingly gone through some serious home & interior compulsions and even made some hasty acquisitions, all happily successful. However, there's something that keeps coming in our way from day-to-day: the utter lack of storage. I refuse to admit that this is a result of owning too many things, an old apartment simply has not been designed for the amounts of things the modern human requires. Since that modern human happens to also be an aesthetically uncompromising individual, to the point of ridicule, we have ourselves a true first world problem.

Olohuoneessamme ammotti eräs nurkka tyhjyyttään, mutta koska toisella seinällä on jo seinän pituinen kirjahylly, en halunnut tähän nurkkaan mitään yhtälailla korkeaa.

Our livingroom happened to have one gaping corner, but because the adjacent wall is filled with a wall-long library, I didn't want anything too tall here too. Thus we decided to search for a dresser that would fulfill the strict aesthetic requirements, store a relative amount of belongings and fit into our slightly tight budget. It just so happened, that as Ikea is not an option and none of the online marketplaces happened to have anything interesting for sale (and because the dresser had to be found immediately, of course), we brought ourselves to a thrift store one Sunday afternoon. And - as might be expected - I found something immediately. The dresser was perfectly Art Deco, made of mahogany, the perfect size - and in dreadful condition. My better half glanced at the desk, then looked me in what seemed a cold-sweat-panic and said: no. Apparently the previous library painting project that took weeks had caused a faint trauma for furniture renovation. The longest demonstration of my diplomatic abilities commenced and in the end, we bought the dresser. He swore that he wouldn't touch the project.

Luckily the other man in my life, Daddy, is always ready for a project and would rather spend time on one than he's own paperwork. In addition, he owns a wide variety of tools and machines that came in handy once again. Personally I had thought that it would be nice to leave some of the patina that the dresser had acquired over the years, "you know, to acchieve that lived-in atmosphere everyone's paying for". Dad looked at me as if I had said something entirely unforgivable and, with a tone that is only acquired over years of experience, said: either do it perfectly, or not at all. I had little choice but listen and happily so. First, we scooped the old varnish completely off the mahogany veneer, leaving the surface bare. I then went through every inch of the dresser with four different strengths of sandpaper. Last, we spread two thin layers of teak oil on the wood. The truth is that in furniture renovation, one should always do the ground work thoroughly.

I had bought the stain and the linoil varnish beforehand, but not completely without trouble. I was told to visit a certain specialist shop for them, where I took my time explaining the exact colour that I wanted the dresser to be, and that I wouldn't tolerate the faintest strokemarks (the perfectionist in me had suddenly gained ground). The salesperson patiently explained that the tone and age of the wood would affect the colour, so it could not be controlled completely by the tone of the stain. I squandered a hundred euros on the stain and varnish and swore I would revenge if anything went wrong. A little lesson: doubt a professional in their work and you'll be sorry in the end. I made a mixture with 5% stain and 95% varnish and using both a brush and a roller to acchieve an even finish. We flipped each surface horizontally to prevent runoffs and only applied a very thin layer of varnish, twice, after which the colour was perfect.

Because our house doesn't have an elevator, and so we had to carry the dresser to the fourth floor, I decided that I would only apply the final layer of varnish in our apartment, so as to prevent the finish from being scratched during transportation. The desired colour had already been acchieved, so for the final layer I only used varnish, leaving out the stain (colour). Tonkinois varnish is ridiculously expensive, but also solvent-free and thus can be applied inside. It is smart to apply the final finish inside, because even if the smell isn't pleasent, all sorts of bugs will more than willingly commit suicide attacks on varnish outside, which will completely destroy an even surface.  2-4 layers of varnish should be adequate for indoor furniture, and although I am happy with the results I got with three, I might add a fourth one later. The last two layers of varnish will make a piece of furniture glossy, which can be accentuated with a layer of wax. I re-fastened all the knobs and locks only after all the finishes had dried.

The dresser cost us around two-and-a-half hundred euros, and a few days of work. Personally I think the desk was well worth it. Even if I calculate a comfortable tax-free wage for the hours I worked, the final amount could hardly pay us half of a desk renovated by a professional. Besides, scraping off varnish is terribly therapeutic! So, had I wanted to really stretch the profitability calculation, I could argue that I saved a therapeutist's pay, too.

Let's return back to when we bought the dresser: I had just payed for it when I noticed to fourty-something ladies standing beside the dresser, eyeing it carefully. I went along, feeling slightly victorious, and asked how they liked the desk, because I had just payed for it. The ladies said they liked it very well, but were actually eyeing it, because their grandmother had owned one just like it. Their grandmother's dresser had come along with her house, which she had bought in the 1940's and they generally expected that the dresser was older, so probably from the twenties or thirties. So, our desk is, very probably, around a hundred years old, and let me just say, that if it has done this well (with a little help) for so long, I have every reason to believe it will do just as marvelously for the next century.
