The Story of an Old Dresser

Uusi kuukausi ja muutoksen aika! Suurin osa blogini lukijoista on tällä kotimaassa Suomessa, joten suomenkielinen teksti löytyy vastedes tästä ylhäältä, teidän lukijoiden toiveiden mukaan. Sitten itse asiaan. Kun tuo tavaranomistaja sattuu vielä olemaan naurettavuuteen asti tinkimätön esteetikko, on tyypillinen first world problem valmis.

New month, new tricks! Most of my readers are here in Finland, so from now on the Finnish version will be up first and the English translation down here, as desired by you, my friends. And then, back to business. Since we moved into our new apartment, I have unsurprisingly gone through some serious home & interior compulsions and even made some hasty acquisitions, all happily successful. However, there's something that keeps coming in our way from day-to-day: the utter lack of storage. I refuse to admit that this is a result of owning too many things, an old apartment simply has not been designed for the amounts of things the modern human requires. Since that modern human happens to also be an aesthetically uncompromising individual, to the point of ridicule, we have ourselves a true first world problem.

Olohuoneessamme ammotti eräs nurkka tyhjyyttään, mutta koska toisella seinällä on jo seinän pituinen kirjahylly, en halunnut tähän nurkkaan mitään yhtälailla korkeaa.

Our livingroom happened to have one gaping corner, but because the adjacent wall is filled with a wall-long library, I didn't want anything too tall here too. Thus we decided to search for a dresser that would fulfill the strict aesthetic requirements, store a relative amount of belongings and fit into our slightly tight budget. It just so happened, that as Ikea is not an option and none of the online marketplaces happened to have anything interesting for sale (and because the dresser had to be found immediately, of course), we brought ourselves to a thrift store one Sunday afternoon. And - as might be expected - I found something immediately. The dresser was perfectly Art Deco, made of mahogany, the perfect size - and in dreadful condition. My better half glanced at the desk, then looked me in what seemed a cold-sweat-panic and said: no. Apparently the previous library painting project that took weeks had caused a faint trauma for furniture renovation. The longest demonstration of my diplomatic abilities commenced and in the end, we bought the dresser. He swore that he wouldn't touch the project.

Luckily the other man in my life, Daddy, is always ready for a project and would rather spend time on one than he's own paperwork. In addition, he owns a wide variety of tools and machines that came in handy once again. Personally I had thought that it would be nice to leave some of the patina that the dresser had acquired over the years, "you know, to acchieve that lived-in atmosphere everyone's paying for". Dad looked at me as if I had said something entirely unforgivable and, with a tone that is only acquired over years of experience, said: either do it perfectly, or not at all. I had little choice but listen and happily so. First, we scooped the old varnish completely off the mahogany veneer, leaving the surface bare. I then went through every inch of the dresser with four different strengths of sandpaper. Last, we spread two thin layers of teak oil on the wood. The truth is that in furniture renovation, one should always do the ground work thoroughly.

I had bought the stain and the linoil varnish beforehand, but not completely without trouble. I was told to visit a certain specialist shop for them, where I took my time explaining the exact colour that I wanted the dresser to be, and that I wouldn't tolerate the faintest strokemarks (the perfectionist in me had suddenly gained ground). The salesperson patiently explained that the tone and age of the wood would affect the colour, so it could not be controlled completely by the tone of the stain. I squandered a hundred euros on the stain and varnish and swore I would revenge if anything went wrong. A little lesson: doubt a professional in their work and you'll be sorry in the end. I made a mixture with 5% stain and 95% varnish and using both a brush and a roller to acchieve an even finish. We flipped each surface horizontally to prevent runoffs and only applied a very thin layer of varnish, twice, after which the colour was perfect.

Because our house doesn't have an elevator, and so we had to carry the dresser to the fourth floor, I decided that I would only apply the final layer of varnish in our apartment, so as to prevent the finish from being scratched during transportation. The desired colour had already been acchieved, so for the final layer I only used varnish, leaving out the stain (colour). Tonkinois varnish is ridiculously expensive, but also solvent-free and thus can be applied inside. It is smart to apply the final finish inside, because even if the smell isn't pleasent, all sorts of bugs will more than willingly commit suicide attacks on varnish outside, which will completely destroy an even surface.  2-4 layers of varnish should be adequate for indoor furniture, and although I am happy with the results I got with three, I might add a fourth one later. The last two layers of varnish will make a piece of furniture glossy, which can be accentuated with a layer of wax. I re-fastened all the knobs and locks only after all the finishes had dried.

The dresser cost us around two-and-a-half hundred euros, and a few days of work. Personally I think the desk was well worth it. Even if I calculate a comfortable tax-free wage for the hours I worked, the final amount could hardly pay us half of a desk renovated by a professional. Besides, scraping off varnish is terribly therapeutic! So, had I wanted to really stretch the profitability calculation, I could argue that I saved a therapeutist's pay, too.

Let's return back to when we bought the dresser: I had just payed for it when I noticed to fourty-something ladies standing beside the dresser, eyeing it carefully. I went along, feeling slightly victorious, and asked how they liked the desk, because I had just payed for it. The ladies said they liked it very well, but were actually eyeing it, because their grandmother had owned one just like it. Their grandmother's dresser had come along with her house, which she had bought in the 1940's and they generally expected that the dresser was older, so probably from the twenties or thirties. So, our desk is, very probably, around a hundred years old, and let me just say, that if it has done this well (with a little help) for so long, I have every reason to believe it will do just as marvelously for the next century.

    1. Kiitos Heidi!
