Cashmere | A Short Maintenance Guide

The cashmere season prolonged until the end of July this year, and despite the occasional sun that we still get, it is no longer warm at either dusk or dawn. There's a clear scent of autumn in the air - and no wonder, it is the first of September today. Whilst I have given in to autumn rather reluctantly, the cashmere season is something I look forward to every year. It will - or has - commenced again - before it really had the chance to end. Contrary to common perception, cashmere is a relatively strong material, although slightly demanding in terms of care. In the best case, however, delicate care can earn you one of those garments that you just can't resist wearing all too often, because they both look and feel too good to be true - year after year.  Here are my tricks, acquired over the years and through some more or less unfortunate experience.

Choosing the right size: is important in enhancing the longevity of your cashmere product, so take care to choose the right size at purchase. Never buy without trying on first, and never take the smaller size because you'll feel better about yourself (applicable in life beyond cashmeres). A cashmere knit is not supposed to be snug, but rather slightly loose - just like your silk blouses and shirts. A snug size will cause unnecessary pulling and stress on the knit and fibre, resulting in tears. Cashmere is best worn against the skin, because that is where it's insulative features are most effective, but I would try a new knit on over a shirt to ensure the size is appropriately loose.

In between wears: a cashmere knit needs to be given rest every now and then - just as you would do with shoes. Extensive, daily wear stresses the fibre and thus it is important to give it the time it requires to recover. Ventilating a cashmere item properly after (every) use is a very effective habit in maintaining the quality of the fibre. As an animal fibre - cashmere is collected from the winter coat of the Asian cashmere goat - cashmere has the ability to cleanse itself in fresh air.  When not worn, fold your cashmeres airily, never hang.

Käyttökertojen välissä: on tärkeää antaa kashmir-neuleen levätä välillä. Jatkuva, päivittäinen käyttö kuormittaa kuitua ja siksi on tärkeää muistaa antaa neuleelle aikaa palautua. Neuleen tuuletus (jokaisen) käyttökerran jälkeen on hyvä tapa ylläpitää kuidun laatua. Eläinkuituna - kashmir valmistetaan aasialaisen kashmir-vuohen talviturkin alukarvasta - kashmirilla on hämmästyttävä kyky puhdistaa itsensä pelkän raikkaan ulkoilman avulla.

Washing: should not be done too often. Water and soap are required only when a thorough airing can no longer remove the smell of wear, or when a stain can't be removed by merely wiping with a wet towel. I have washed all my cashmeres by hand after one detrimental machine round a few years back - so although your washing machine might have the appropriate program available, I will not recommend it. Washing by hand might be the less-tempting option, but no amount of blood sweat and tears can bring back a washing machine-shrunken cashmere - and yes, I have tried. When washing, pay attention to the following:
  • Always wash your cashmere in lukewarm water. Cold water will not cleanse as effectively, whilst hot water will shrink the fibre.
  • Wash similar colours together, cashmere will usually release some colour in water and might stain other items.
  • Use a detergent suitable for washing wool and silk, and always sparingly. I use Maison Belle Wool and Silk from the Isabella Smith apothecary line. Always mix your detergent properly into the water before sinking in the sweater. Remove persistent stains by rubbing gently with gall or Marseille soap.
  • Never leave your cashmeres sitting in detergent-infused water for a long time. This will brittle the fibre.
  • When washing, do not rub two cashmere surfaces together, but rather keep moving the knits around underwater, lift out carefully and sink back. Water moving through the knit is the most delicate end effective way to cleanse the fibre thoroughly.
  • When squeezing off the water, be careful to never wring your cashmere - this vulnerates the fibres and will result in tears and stretching.
  • After washing, rinse your washings at least thrice, or until the water runs clear.
  • Lay flat to dry, always out of direct sunlight. Drying your cashmeres in a hanging position will stretch the garment out of shape, whilst direct sunlight brittles the fibres and may cause bleaching. If you can't fit your drying rack in your shower (the knit will be dripping after wash), spread a clean towel over the rack (manifold) and lay your knit on top of the towel.
  • Washing by hand usually consumes more water than by machine. Consider the environment and wash several items at once. These instructions are applicable for silk, wool and merino garments, so you could include some in the same wash.
Kashmir-neuletta pestessä on hyvä ottaa huomioon seuraavat asiat:
Itse käytän Belle Maison Wool and Silk - pesuainetta Isabella Smithiltä.
  • Aseta kuivumaan vaaka-asentoon, äläkä koskaan suoraan auringonpaisteeseen.

Pill removal: should be done directly after washing, rather than before, as cashmere will pill when handled within water. However, pill removal is usually necessary also between washes, and the newer the item, the more it is likely to pill. Cashmere is a relatively long fibre, but short fibre clips are often left amidst longer ones in the making of cashmere yarn. When these clips separate from the yarn and rise to the surface of the knit, usually as a result of the knit rubbing against something, the ends of the clips intertwine - and the knit pills. The density of the knit affects the amount of pilling: the denser the yarn is set in the knit, the less it pills. The denser the yarn is set, the heavier the knit is, and thus also more expensive - the price of cashmere is measured by weight. This has caused the common perception that the more expensive the item, the better quality the cashmere, because it pills less - when the real reason lies within the density of the knit. The colour of the yarn also affects the amount of pilling: yarns of certain colour are softer, whilst other colours are harder - softer yarns pill more easily. Careful wear can decrease pilling to some extent. If something (the strap of a bag or the lining of a coat) continuously rubs against the knit, pilling is increased - quite obviously. However, if you patiently remove the pill and wash the item correctly, pilling will end in due time - as the short fibre clips run out. Pill can be easily removed with a cashmere comb - and for the braver - electric pill removers. If taking the electric option though, be careful to lay your knit flat properly, and to not catch any loose yarn lops inside the remover, because this will cause tears - which are a pain to repair.

Storing: is done most efficiently by wrapping the knit in tissue paper and folding softly within a properly ventilating container, preferably made of carton/paper. This will ensure the knit retains its shape and bounciness best. Never store cahmere knits in a hanging position. Make sure to pack away well-cleansed and ventilated cashmeres only. A stain that sits on the fibre for months will turn it brittle and cause tears. Cashmere is also - and quite unfortunately - rather popular amongst vermin. Vermin can be present independent of the newness or cleaness of the knits' environment. They are best fought with lavender and napthalene. If there's a risk - and even if you're not aware of one - it is always good to slip some dried lavender in fabric pouches, or a disc of naftaline between your knits. Moths and fur beetles bite small holes into cashmere and wool alike, which, again, are arduous to repair.
