Keeping Warm

Ehdin sipsutella töihin vuorittomissa nahkanilkkureissa kerran nyt kovien pakkasten aikaan, jonka jälkeen ostin välittömästi lämpimimmät kaupunkikelpoiset kengät jotka löysin. Palelevat varpaat ovat ehkä inhottavinta, mitä tiedän. Mistä muuten johtuu, että talvikengät ovat niin harvoin lämpimät, käytännölliset ja hyvännäköiset? Tässä varmasti piilee syy sille, etten ole omistanut oikeita talvikenkiä sitten ala-asteen. 

I managed tip-toeing to work in unlined leather shoes once during the current wave of cold weather and then immediately bought myself the warmest winter boots I could find. Freezing toes are without question one of the worst things I know. Also, please enlighten me on why winter boots almost never manage to be warm, practical and good-looking? This must be the reason why I haven't owned a proper pair since elementary school. 

Tällä kertaa etsinnät päättyivät kuitenkin suunnilleen ensimmäiseen kenkäpariin, johon koskin. Ulkoa rouheaa, antiikkikäsiteltyä lampaannahkaa, sisäpuolella superlämmin lampaankarva. Tarjolla olisi ollut lähes samaa kenkää mustana, mutta päätinpä yllättää itseni ja valitsin ruskean. Elämää reunalla. Kyseistä kenkää oli jäljellä yksi pari, joka oli juuri etsimääni kokoa ja alennuksessa alle puoleen hintaan. Clearly it was meant to be.

This time the search (which had all the potential to extend infinitely) ended at practically the first pair I grasped. The outer is an antique-treated lambskin, and the inside is lined with lambsfur. A very similar boot would have been available in black, but I decided to live on the edge a little and chose brown. There was one pair left, in exactly the size I was looking for and reduced to less than half the original price. Clearly, it was meant to be. 

Ajattelin aluksi, että kengät eivät nyt ehkä ole ne eleganteimmat tai tyylikkäimmät, mutta kahdenkymmenen asteen pakkasessa oppii arvostamaan täysin lampaankarvalla vuorattuja kenkiä aivan uudella tapaa. Jos varpaani osaisivat, ne nauraisivat pakkaselle päin naamaa. Loppujen lopuksi talvi on vain asenne- ja, ennen kaikkea, pukeutumiskysymys. 

At first I mulled that the boots weren't quite up to my standards in elegance and style, but you learn to appreciate a lambskin-lined boot in a whole new context when temperatures drop by twenty below zero. My bare toes feel as if they're mocking the cold from their warm asylum. In the end, winter is only a question of attitude - and the right clothes.
