Arela AW17: Appearances

As we are enjoying the very best of spring, it is hardly tempting to recognize the fact that autumn will be back in just a few months. Thus, viewing the Autumn-Winter collections is a hardship for me every year - and not least because it always reminds me that in a few months we will again be facing a long, dark winter, when we've only just struggled thorugh the previous one. There is one collection, however, that I always eagerly wait to preview, despite the resentment towards it's in-season. The Arela autumn-winter collection never fails to fill every expectation, and - if not quite having me wish it was already autumn - at least makes the idea of the dark cold season somewhat more bearable.

Arelan mallistoissa päällimmäisenä eivät ihastuta pelkästään ne tuotteet - vaikka toki nekin -, vaan erityisesti jokaisen malliston syvä tunnelma, joka on kokonaisvaltaisesti esillä myös malliston esittelytilaisuudessa. Kaikki tilaisuuden yksityiskohdat, itse esittelytilasta tarjoilupöydän kukkiin, korostavat malliston omaleimaista teemaa ja tarkoin valittua - joskaan ei ikinä yliharkittua tai -karsittua - värikarttaa. Mallistoteemassa on aina sellainen kutkuttava jännite, johon pääsee uppoutumaan mallistoesittelyssä tehokkaasti - todella aistimaan, minkälaisen paikan, hetken, ihmiset ja tunnelman suunnittelija - tässä tapauksessa Anni Arela - on nähnyt mallistoa tehdessään.

Whilst I don't mean to downplay the charm of the actual products - because you only now how effectively they've charmed me -, it seems that the true appeal of the Arela collection always lies in their profound themes, which are also - always - comprehensively  displayed at their press day. Down to every last detail, from the venue to the flowers at the coffee table, everything seems well-placed to accentuate the - often very original - theme and carefully selected, although never over-thought or -trimmed, colour palette. Within the themes, there always seems to be a slight tension, which is all the more accessible, when it's introduction is set so carefully in such suitable surroundings. The well-explained tension, echoed into concrete spaces and details so well, makes it almost possible to feel part of the setting and atmosphere the designer - in this case Anni Arela - has so carefully painted with her mind's eye upon designing each collection.

The theme of the Appearences AW17 collection is trifling with the sensations of comfort and discomfort. The collection has been inspired by the anticipatory atmosphere of a variety of  thrillers, and their quaint undertones. I found these themes best conveyed by the intriguing colour palette and the unexpected colour combinations. I had, in truth, seen the colours previously, as Kirsi modelled for the AW lookbook - and to be quite honest, at the time thought the palette to be slightly too peculiar.

During the press event, however, the hues of saffron, bright fuchsia and striking orange gained new ground as the themes were explained, and suddenly hit home on a completely unanticipatory level. Hence, I have succeeded to a point where I am tempted to acquire a head-to-toe look in the nearly neon orange hue, called Tangerine bright orange, for the bleak November weather. I will repeat (again) what I have said before, that the art of choosing exactly the right hues is what Arela does, and does to perfection.

Oman jännitteensä mallistoon luo tietenkin lookbookin kuvauspaikkana toiminut Sara Hildénin taidemuseo, joka on kaikessa jylhässä betonisuudessaan upea vastakohta vaatteiden  kirkkaille väreille ja pehmeille materiaaleille. Mallistoesittelyyn oli haettu samankaltaista tunnelmaa uudesta lempigalleriastani, Ruoholahdenrannassa sijaitsevasta Forum Box:sta, jossa olivat parhaillaan kolmen taiteilijan, Erik Creutzigerin, Satu Rautiaisen ja Enoch Bergstenin, näyttelyt. Oli mahtavaa todeta, miten taide tuki jälleeen Arelan uutta mallistoa - kevät-kesämallisto nimittäin esiteltiin niin ikään taiteen parissa, hurmaavan Kirsti Tuokon työhuoneella Kaapelitehtaalla.

An additional tension was added to the collection by the juxtaposition of hard and soft, by photographing the collection's lookbook at the Sara Hildén museum, which, in all it's grand, concrete massiveness proposes a vast contrast to the bright colours, and luxuriously soft cashmere and merino. Like-wise, the press event was held at my new favourite gallery, the industrial-like white brick space of Forum Box, surrounded by the exhibitions of Erik Creutzinger, Satu Rautiainen and Enoch Bergsten - which, as I once again noted - supported the collection beautifully. Let us hope that such a dialogue between Arela and art will prevail, because presenting the previous collection at Kirsti Tuokko's studio was also, at least in the eyes of a viewer, a great success.

Mallisto sikseen, parasta Arelassa on ehdottomasti brändin takana töitä paiskivat naiset.

The collections aside, the best part of Arela are unquestionnably the women who work tirelessly to make the brand what it is, and aspires to be. In these ladies, albeit veiled in soft cashmere, there is a strength and positive decisiveness, that will take the brand any direction it wishes to go. Thank you again for having me over on your special day Maija, Anni, Viivi, Hanna and Arela's new sales manager Heli! A special thank you also to the executive director of Forum Box, Alina, for introducing the incredible exhibitons!
