Olen maininnut yhden suosikkiputiikeistani, Proloquen, täällä blogin puolella ennenkin, viimeksi kertoessani sieltä ostamistani ihanista Bee-korvakoruista, mutta tämän ihanan putiikin perinpohjaisempi esittely on toistaiseksi jäänyt tekemättä. Proloquen muutettua maaliskuun lopulla Iso Roobertinkadulle, halusin kuitenkin ehdottomasti nähdä uudet tilat ensimmäisten joukossa ja niinpä ryntäsin kamerani kanssa paikalle heti aikataulun salliessa.
I've mentioned one of my all-time favourite boutiques, Proloque earlier, when I wrote about the Bee earrings, but to this date haven't managed writing a more thorough introduction of the beautiful place. However, when Proloque moved to a new space on Iso Roobertinkatu at the end of March, I refused to let them settle down in peace, but barged in one sunny afternoon camera in hand, ready to be awed - and naturally, the all-new Proloque did all but disappoint my expectations.
Myymälän uudet tilat koostuvat kahdesta peräkkäisestä huoneesta ja tuntuvat ainakin kolme kertaa suuremmilta kuin Uudenmaankadun vanha myymälä. Osittain tilantuntua luo varmasti hulppea huonekorkeus ja ennen varsinaista kattoa loppuva seinäpanelointi, johon on valittu ehkä maailman ihanin vihreä sävy - juuri sellainen jolla haluaisin maalata myös tehosteseinän omaan kotiimme. Ja katosta puheen ollen; Proloquessa kannattaa vierailla ihan vain nähdäkseen myymälän sisäkaton. Tiloja remontoitaessa oli nimittäin huomattu, että vanha kattopäällyste rapisi holtittomasti, joten se oli poistettu kokonaan ja alta paljastui alkuperäinen punatiilinen holvikatto. En ehkä kestä todistamaani kattotäydellisyyttä. Olin peräti niin ällikällä lyöty, että olen ilmeisesti vaan tuijotellut kattoa niska vääränä, tajuamatta tallentaa siitä ainoatakaan onnistunutta kuvaa kameraan - mutta menkää itse katsomaan, katto on varmasti vaikuttavampi tosielämässä kuin kuvissa!
The new space cosists of two successive rooms and feels at least thrice the size of the old shop on Uudenmaankatu. The illusion of spaciousity is enhanced by the generous height of the rooms and the wall panelling that runs only three quarters of the wall - and is painted in one of my favourite shades of green. But as wonderful as the walls might be, they are a miserable second to the ceiling. The ceiling, I might add. Upon renovating the space, Elsa tells me, the landlord had discovered that the former white plastering came pattering off and so it had to be completely removed - and to everyone's best interest, because it revealed the most beautiful original arched brick ceiling. It seems I have been so in awe of this element that I've only been braking my neck staring at it, never once thinking I might also immortialise it on my camera - but all the better for you to go and see for yourself, no camera can do proper justice to it's beauty!
Muutosta huolimatta Proloquessa on säilynyt sama aarrearkkumainen tunnelma, joka oli jo vahvasti aistittavissa Uudenmaankadulla, mutta joka on kyllä ottanut lisäkierroksia uusien tilojen myötä. Myymälään käydessä tuntuu, kuin astuisi johonkin hieman erilaiseen, mystisempään ja satumaisempaan todellisuuteen, jossa aika pysähtyy ja ulkopuolinen maailma unohtuu hetkeksi. Olen törmännyt samankaltaiseen tunnelmaan muutamassa piskuisessa antiikkikaupassa Edinburghissa, mutta muutoin ne kerrat jolloin jokin tila onnistuu eristämään minut todellisuudesta näin perinpohjaisesti ovat harvassa. Ehkä täytyykin tehdä tämän tunnelman metsästämisestä uusi harrastus? Saadapa moinen tunnelma luotua myös omaan kotiin!
Despite moving, the tangible mood of a treasure chest has remained at Proloque, and in my opinnion deepened with the enchanting new quarters. Upon entering the shop it feels as if stepping into a completely different reality, one more mystical and story-like, that doesn't recognize such commonplace matters as time. I've felt a similar atmosphere at a few miniscule antique shops in Edinburgh, but it is rarely that a mere space manages to remove me from reality this effectively. Perhaps I'll make it a little pass-time of mine to look for such places? If only I could manage recreating some of this magic at home!
Proloquessa myytävät kauniit esineet ovat tietenkin aivan oma lukunsa; en ole vielä todistanut missään muualla yhtä kiehtovaa valikoimaa. Jokainen esine on parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla omintakeinen - kuten usein myös tarinat esineiden takana. Omia suosikkejani ovat Haws:n kastelukannut, hurmaavat mustekalamaljakot ja Macon & Lesquoy:n helmikirjaillut rintaneulat, sekä tietysti Fornasettin uskomattomat tuoksukynttilät (ja erityisesti niiden keraamiset ruukut). Haaveilen myös "hiusharjojen Rolls Roycesta", Mason Pearsonin upeasta käsityönä valmistetusta harjasta.
The products sold at Proloque, are of course their own story; I don't think I've seen a similar selection anywhere else. Each object is original in their own right - and so are the stories behind most. My personal favourites are of course the Haws watering cans, the whimsically octopussy-esque glass vases and the bead embellished brooches By Macon & Lesquoy, as well as the Fornasetti scented candles (and especially their ceramic containers). I've also had a few daydreams of "the Rolls-Royce of hairbrushes", the hand made Mason Pearson brush. The hairbrush, that is.
Arvostan suuresti sitä, että Proloqueen on osattu valita tällaisia uskomattomia esineitä, ja että niiden taustoista osataan myös kysyttäessä kertoa. On mielestäni ihanaa, että Helsingissä on liike josta saa nyt esimerkiksi noita yllä mainitsemiani perinteikkäitä ja peribrittiläisiä tuotteita! Maltan tuskin odottaa, mitä uutuuksia Elsa ja Nora Iso Roobertinkadun tiloihin lähiaikoina saavat - tästä ladyt vihjailivat vielä hyvin salamyhkäisesti. Onnea uuteen kotiin, Proloque!
I can't but appreciate that the Proloque Ladies have managed to gather such a collection and especially, that further information on the products is available whenever asked for. I find it wonderful that such traditional and cardinally British products (as mentioned above) are available in Helsinki! And can hardly wait to hear what's next - Elsa and Nora were still acting remarkably cool and collected about it, but it can only be something irresistably special, of course.
